Why Don’t We Know?

Luke 17:20-37 – The Coming of the Kingdom of God

“Why Don’t We Know?”

In this passage there are two things that have been hidden from men’s understanding. One is the day and hour of ‘The Second Coming’ – I write some thoughts on that in a blog devotion called ‘Scorpions’ – check it out if you are interested by writing scorpion into my blogs search engine.

Yet more importantly, most people don’t even understand what The Kingdom of God is and that is fascinating. The Kingdom was by far, the most important subject to Jesus. When He had a chance, He talked about it and told stories about it. He was in love with the idea of the Kingdom and turned most questions back to the subject.

Jesus replied,“The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.”

So why do most Christians I have ever met, not know what The Kingdom of God is?

I mean thats a huge question! Why do most followers of Jesus, His ardent fans, friends and servants not know what the phrase means?

I just got back from a trip where I spoke for a church at a retreat and as I often do, I asked tham the question; “What is the Kingdom of God?”. Nobody knew. Most were unsure and those who ventured answers like; ‘The Church’. ‘The People of God’. “The place called Heaven’… were of course wrong. It is none of those things.

So if you are reading this and you don’t know, let me tell you. Yet before I do, can I ask you to ask yourself the question; “Why don’t we know?’

The greek phrase used is Basileia and it refers to the rule, realm, reign and royalty of God. Everything and everyone and everything in everyone, that is the way God wants it to be, is The Kingdom of God. That is why is can be near and also in us.

I describe it in more detail in my book ‘The Cloud and the Line’ plus share some thoughts on how understanding it can drastically impact our lives.

For now however, let me keep pursuing this one question: Why don’t we know?

Why don’t most Christians know the basic thing that Jesus was most interested in. Why is it not made clear to us in Church? His dream of what the world can be, His dream of what the world will be one day. His command to us of seeking first the Kingdom has been perverted into seek to get into Heaven. Yet it means so much more than that.

Anyway, today, I think I will just leave you to ponder why it is, that in the thousands of people I have asked over the last few years, so few truly understand what the phrase actually means.

I think I may have an answer but you find yours.
