The Pastor Plaster

Luke 18:1-8 – The Parable of the Persistent Widow

“The Pastor Plaster”

This parable connects me with something I was thinking of today. Here is a woman who represents Jesus’ desire for us to wrestle in prayer and that those who do not give up, get a breakthrough.

Recently, I have been asking Christians if they pray and study on a daily bass. Around one in five do. This, I feel, has some serious consequences for our lives. I am not interested in the whole guilt thing. I am more interested in the fact that without regular prayer and study, our minds cannot be transformed and if our minds are not being transformed by persistent prayer and study, then we will not be able to test and approve what God’s will is for our lives.

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

We will be unable to truly understand God’s will in different circumstances. So what do we do?

We look for short cuts.

For instance, we a cut, a cut in our communication with God and so we stick on a “Pastor Plaster”. A Plaster is the english word used for what the Americans refer to as a Band-Aid. The minister becomes our short cut for answers. Church becomes our spiritual medicine cabinet.

For some it is not a Pastor plaster but some other short term superficial answer like a gut feeling or a desperate attempt to seek out a prophetic word or maybe a blog. Yet God wants to empower us in order that we can live a life where we have victory because we have understanding. Not just understanding about religion but about how life itself works.

Once we begin to gain this understanding we can make much wiser choices. Consistent study and prayer lead to consistent understanding, which allows us to make consistent wise decisions and live a consistently healthier life.

Let me ask you a question… is this blog a plaster for you or it is an added bonus. I hope and pray that you read the passage these blogs are about rather than just the blog itself. My written thoughts are a poor substitute for the actual Words of God.

They are meant to bring further understanding not provide a Blog-Aid.
