Entitled?
Luke 17:1-10 – Sin, Faith, Duty
“Entitled?”
One thing seems to tie these three teachings together… entitlement. Entitlement is a problem, especially I have to say, here in the States. Whereas in the UK many young people seemed to have little hope for the future, many here expect a rosé future to be handed to them. Working with young adults has led me to believe that our identity in Christ has been confused with ‘entitlement in Christ’.
We are children of God but with that comes a responsibility to…
“work out your salvation” Philippians 2:12
The greek word translated as work here is katergazomai and means to bring to to decisive completion.
Yes I have a title; Child of God. Yet that does not mean I should expect that no-one will do me wrong. When they inevitably do, I must bring my salvation to completion by regurlarly forgiving those who do me evil.
Yes I have a title: Saint. Yet that does not mean that miracles will just happen to me, as if they are an experience God is responsible to provide in order to boost my faith. Instead, I need to bring my salvation to completion, by acting upon the things He tells me He can do, if I do my part.
Yes I have a title; Royal Priest. Yet that does not mean that I deserve a reward for doing my duty, I’ve received that reward in advance. Rather I must bring my salvation to completion by going the extra mile and in doing so, be blessed countless times.
I have many titles now because of God’s grace but I should not succumb to entitlement and I should certainly not lead others into that sin.
